Hainan Island was offered by PRC to SGP, to get us out of
Taiwan.
With our heavy dependence on USA for military hardware, and the
close synergy and ties in Military relationship, it will be very
doubtful if SGP will ever take up this offer from PRC.
The recent Singapore Telecoms attempt to take over the now bankrupt
US telecom giant - Global Communications - is revealing in the
concern of the US Government of any SGP association with PRC
related companies.
In the attempt by SingTel to take over GLOBAL Communications, the
attempt had met with stiff resistance, when it was discovered that
a Hongkong Company with China GLC was a partner with Singapore in
this deal.
It was only when the Hongkong Company withdrew from its joint
venture with SingTel, and with a smart move by SingTel to allow the
majority of Directors to be retired US Generals (in a newly formed
Board) that this deal finally received approval from the US
Government.
Singapore Government Linked Companies have bought into many other
US Corporations that have faced business closure due to financial
problems, and most of these US companies are servicing the US
Defense Establishments.
The present success in the US-SGP industrial-military relationship
was carefully cultivated, and it will be unlikely that this
relationship will ever be placed in jeopardy by moving any closer
to China in this same area.
